My Teaching Approach

Is learning piano just about playing notes? Absolutely not!

Notes are simply symbols printed on sheet music. If students don’t grasp the key concepts, even practicing a piece a hundred times won’t yield meaningful results. To truly master a piece, it’s not just about building a solid technical foundation—it also requires a detailed analysis of the composition’s structure, style, use of music theory, historical context, and even the composer’s thought process.

These abstract concepts can, in fact, be simplified, understood, and applied through proper teaching. After all, art is inseparable from life—why did the composer choose a particular chord? Were they trying to convey a specific emotion?

Only when students genuinely understand these essential principles and techniques can they learn how to practice effectively and interpret a piece correctly. That’s why I encourage my students to ask questions during lessons. By sharing my experience and knowledge, I aim to help them gain a deeper understanding of music.

FAQ

  • While every child develops differently, I typically recommend starting around age 4-5. Boys often do better when they start at 5 or older, while girls can sometimes begin a bit earlier. If your child shows a strong interest in music or has exceptional focus for their age, they might be ready to start as early as 3.

For younger students, parents might want to consider group music classes first - they're a great way to build musical foundations through fun activities. Once they're older and more ready for structured learning, we can transition them to private lessons.

  • Lessons take place at my private studio in Mei Foo. For students living in Central & Western District, I also offer the option of in-home lessons.

  • All students are strongly encouraged to have a piano at home to ensure effective daily practice. Regular practice is essential for progress, and having an instrument at home makes this much more practical.

  • I am fluent in both English and Cantonese, and you're welcome to choose either language for your lessons. Musical terms will be taught in their original languages (such as Italian or German) with translations and explanations provided.

  • Students at typical HK chain music schools usually advance one grade per year, taking about 8 years to reach Grade 8.

My private students generally complete Grade 8 in 5-6 years. For students with strong musical aptitude, it's possible to achieve this in just 2-3 years. However, every student progresses at their own pace, and we focus on building solid foundations rather than rushing through grades.

  • For the best learning results, students are recommended to practice at least 5 days per week.

    For beginners (Grade 1-2):
About 20-30 minutes of daily practice.

For intermediate to advanced students (Grade 3-8):
About 40-60 minutes of daily practice.

  • Not at all! The decision to take graded exams is entirely up to the student and/or their parents, based on their personal learning goals and preferences.

  • Beginner to Intermediate (Pre-Grade to Grade 5)
    $550 per lesson

    Advanced Level (Grade 6-8)
    $700 per lesson

Each lesson is one hour in duration.

Payment for all lessons in the month is due before the first lesson of each month.

  • The purpose of the interview is to assess each student's musical potential and to ensure my teaching style is a good match for them. This helps us create the most effective learning experience from the start.

  • The interview session costs $200 and takes about 30 minutes. After the assessment, I'll spend an additional 15 minutes meeting with parents to discuss their child's learning path and goals.

  • If I feel that my teaching approach may not be the best match for your child, I'll be happy to provide alternative recommendations, such as suggesting other piano teachers or learning paths that might better suit your child's needs.

  • Absolutely! I offer specialized programs designed specifically for adult learners. Whether you're a complete beginner or returning to piano after a long break, my teaching approach adapts to your unique needs and goals. It's never too late to start learning piano!
